ZEN MEDITATION
I'm walking down the street humming or singing to myself. Then I notice that I'm humming or singing to myself. And I think to myself, "Aha, I'm having one of those happy moments." Maybe you have these moments too. Sometimes it is possible despite all the difficulties in life and the reports of war to forget oneself in relation to it all.

Somehow you link into some inner peace or radiance. I find that often sound or vibration creates that link. Thich Nat Hanh teaches a mindfulness practice in which, when the sound of a bell is heard, the individual stops what they are doing and "comes home to themselves". The bell tone vibrates and its echo illuminates a moment in time for the conciousness to become aware of itself and choose its next direction.

Prakasha says in his article "What is the essence of sound?" in the summer edition of Ascent Magazine that "consiousness itself, in the yogic tradition of Kashmir, is considered a vibration, a pulsating radiance that oscillates between pure awareness (prakasha-that which illuminates) and the creative, dynamic awareness that consciousness has of itself (vimarsha-that which reflects). This vibration is called spanda (that which throbs) and is likened to an eternal spring, joyfully overflowing its inner essence into manifestation and inspiration, yet ever full, complete and unchanging."

There are so many sounds in our universe of experience: the hissing of the cicadias in the late summer trees; the purring of my cat on my chest; the windy sound of my breathing in my inner ear; the thump of a bass beat in my favorite dance song; a long Om at the end of my asana session. These are a few of my favorite vibrations.

These sounds make me aware of different states of mind that recognizes the awesomeness of nature; the wonder of interspecies relationships; joyfulness and contentment. Am I lost in the sounds or found in awakened sense of conciousness? I don't know; I don't think it matters. Sometimes a good vibration just creeps up on you and there it is. In this late summer I wish for you the pleasure of becoming lost in the vibration and finding your consious self.
